PLEASE NOTE: Since plants are often sourced from the garden to order, sizes do vary a little, depending on how they come out of the ground, but I always endeavour to give a little more rather than less! They are sometimes shipped bare-rooted, but will approximate the size specified (e.g. a 9cm pot).
Cucurbita pepo 'Yellow Golden'
Courgette, Zuccini 'Yellow Golden'
The golden-yellow fruits of this variety are particularly sweet! Pick when young, but allow some to develop to full-sized 'marrows' at the end of the season... they will keep in a cool, airy place all winter and are delicious stuffed with a Mediterranean-style filling, the base ingredients being onions, sweet peppers, tomatoes (including purée or passata), good-quality lamb mince, olives and plenty of garlic and rosemary. Cinnamon adds a warm, mellow note. Either cut out a lid and scoop out the seeds of the marrow, or use thick rounds, deseeded. In either case, it is best to par-cook them before stuffing. Vegetarians can, of course, omit the meat!
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Sow under glass, one seed per 3in pot, from March to May, an inch deep, positioning the seed vertically. Cover with plastic or place in a propagator until germination has occurred. As plants develop, move them to larger pots, or, once there is no danger of frost, plant out in their final positions in the vegetable bed (allow 1 sq metre per plant) or grow bags. Courgettes should ideally be harvested when they are small - 4in/10cm long, but later in the season they can be left to mature into marrows.
