Not to be confused with 'True' Indigo (Indigofera tinctoria), this pretty, low-growing shrub is good for ground cover. The delicate pinnate foliage is bright green and the profusion of pea-like flowers that appear in summer and through to early autumn are a lovely deep pink. Although hardy, in very cold winters the top growth may die back, to return in the spring. Although it prefers full sun, it will tolerate some shade.
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Soak the seeds in hot (not boiling!) water and allow to stand for 24 hours or so, then sow in a pot of moist, good quality compost at a depth of 5mm. Ensure that the compost is kept moist, but not waterlogged, at all times. Prick out seedlings into individual pots and grow on until large enough to plant out in full sun or part shade. |
