PLEASE NOTE: Since plants are often sourced from the garden to order, sizes do vary a little, depending on how they come out of the ground, but I always endeavour to give a little more rather than less! They are sometimes shipped bare-rooted, but will approximate the size specified (e.g. a 9cm pot).

Paulownia tomentosa AGM

A beautiful specimen tree with mauve, foxglove-like blooms in early spring, followed by large, soft, downy leaves. Rapidly growing, it can reach 2m/6ft in the first year and should flower within 2-3 years. Although the plant is fairly hardy in the UK it is a good idea to fleece the tree to protect the flower buds, which are formed in the autumn. If the plant is badly affected by frost and top growth dies back, it will usually produce shoots from the base so can be regenerated as a shrub.
Note: Externally sourced seed. |

Sowing and/or growing instructions | ||||||||||||
Sow indoors at any time of year on the surface of moist, well-drained compost. Barely cover with a sprinking of sieved compost or fine vermiculite and place in a propagator at 18-20C/64-68F. Do not exclude light, which aids germination. Transplant seedlings when large enough into individual pots and grow on under glass for the first winter, planting out the following spring. |
