PLEASE NOTE: Since plants are often sourced from the garden to order, sizes do vary a little, depending on how they come out of the ground, but I always endeavour to give a little more rather than less! They are sometimes shipped bare-rooted, but will approximate the size specified (e.g. a 9cm pot).
Penstemon barbatus var. coccineus
Beardlip penstemon, Bearded penstemon
A native of western USA, the bright, pendulous, vermillion flowers of this beautiful penstemon variety adorn tall, slender stems above lance-shaped, deep-green foliage from August. Best grown toward the front of the border, where it can be seen in all its glory!
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Sow outside in late-autumn or early winter, on the surface of good quality seed compost, dusting with a little fine vermiculite or sieved compost. Provide the shelter of a cold frame, ensuring that the compost is kept moist but not waterlogged. Germination should occur in spring, when temperatures rise, but can be erratic, so don't discard the pot too early. Transplant seedlings and grow on, planting out when large enough.
