The clear lilac blooms of this plant resemble a delicate cornflower, but this is altogether a far superior plant, in my estimation. Not only is it very drought-tolerant, but is lightly scented, makes a good cut flower, attracts all manner of wildlife and will flower through to the first frosts. The finely divided foliage is lovely, as are the seedheads. It is difficult to understand why this plant is not more widely known and grown! It is a very easy plant to grow and will reward with blooms in its first year.
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Sow at 68F/20C in modules in autumn or spring, covering with a light layer of compost. Keep moist, but not waterlogged. The protection of a cold frame or cold greenhouse is recommended. Grow on until large enough to plant out, which will be in late Spring. Ensure that the site chosen has free-draining soil as too much moisture can rot the roots. |
