This delicate iris is perhaps my favourite. The Audrey Hepburn of the iris family... not cheap and gaudy but delicate, composed and very, very classy - a natural beauty! I'm not quite sure how it got its common name; the petals do have a reddish base, but are for the most part a rich blue-purple with striking, intricate veining on a yellow and white ground, held above slender, bright-green stems and foliage which often has fluted folds when young. The plant develops into a large clump over time and makes a wonderful cut flower.

Depending on season, plants may be trimmed back and/or barerooted for shipping.

Sowing and/or growing instructions
Sow 0.25in/6mm deep in pots in Autumn or Spring. Autumn sowings are easier as cold aids germination (which can be erratic, taking 1-6 months) and the pots can be left outside or in a cold frame for the winter. It may also help to soak the seeds in hot (not boiling) water for 24 hours before sowing to soften the hard seed coat. Indoors sowings can be made in Spring by placing pre-soaked seeds into a small plastic bag containing moist, sterile vermiculite. Keep in the fridge 8-12 weeks, checking regularly for germination. Then place pot in a cool place and pot on seedlings as they appear into small individual pots, growing on and planting out when large enough. A very undemanding plant. Split plants when they become too crowded from mid-summer to autumn, discarding the central parts.
