Oenothera odorata 'Apricot Delight'
Evening Primrose 'Apricot Delight'
Delightful and highly recommended!
Type/Hardiness Herbaceous, Perennial, Hardy
Flowering period Summer-Autumn
Height 24-30in/60-80cm
Light preference Sun, part shade
Soil preference Any reasonable, well-drained soil
Sowing time/depth Spring, Surface
The blooms of this (sometimes short-lived) perennial variety of evening primrose are scented in the evenings, the fragrance being reminiscent of a combination of lemons and lilies. It has a rather more lax, open habit than the more common Oenothera biennis. The flower buds are a soft creamy-yellow, darkening to a more substantial yellow as the flowers reach maturity, and then fading to salmon pink as they go over.
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Sow in spring on the surface of good quality compost, dusting with a fine sprinkling of vermiculite. Do not cover the seed as light is required for germination. Place in a propagator at 18-20C/64-68F. Transplant seedlings into individual pots or modules and grow on in cooler conditions. When large enough and after all danger of frost, plant out 12 inches apart. Plants may benefit from gentle support.

Plants should be cut back to close to ground level in late autumn, but can be tidied up a little earlier if required, by removing the top half to two-thirds of the flowering stems. Since the plants can be short-lived, it is recommended to save a few seeds just in case, to sow in spring!
