PLEASE NOTE: Since plants are often sourced from the garden to order, sizes do vary a little, depending on how they come out of the ground, but I always endeavour to give a little more rather than less! They are sometimes shipped bare-rooted, but will approximate the size specified (e.g. a 9cm pot).
Primula auricula, mixed
Auriculas, which are members of the primula family, do not breed true and come in many colours. Lovers of the plants gain much pleasure from crossing them in the hope of coming up with particularly attractive forms. They are not easy to grow from seed but are well worth the effort!
Sowing and/or growing instructions
In late winter to very early spring (February is ideal), press seed gently into the surface of good-quality, moist, but never waterlogged, compost containing some fine grit or perlite. A cool, airy and shady place such as a partly-open cold frame is a good place in which to germinate the seeds. Do not excluding light, as this aids germination, Apply a very thin layer of compost or vermiculite after the seedlings emerge, which usually takes 21-30 days but can be very erratic. Grow on in individual pots of gritty compost, providing good light but never direct sunlight. Growth of young plants can be very slow.
