Sowing time/depth Autumn or Spring, Shallow
Like a bluebell on steroids, this beautiful bulbous plant looks lovely on its own in a terracotta pot. It produces a mass of small, star-shaped, deep plue flowers on short, stout stems in spring. Highly recommended! Plants can naturalise in the ground in a sheltered position, but it may be safer to bring them under cover during the winter.

NOTE: Plants offered in Spring/Summer 2017 are split from a large clump that has hardly flowered this season due to overcrowding (see below). They are, however, healthy plants that will, I am sure, flower next year.

Sowing and/or growing instructions
Sow in autumn in a cool but frost-free greenhouse, lightly covering seed with a sprinkle of sifted compost or vermiculite. Alternatively, sow in spring after giving the seeds a few weeks in the fridge, as they need a period of cold in order to germinate successfully. Aim for a temperature of 50-60F in spring to trigger germination, which can be erratic, taking anything from one to six months. The bulbs formed will take some seasons before they flower, but are well worth the wait. It is recommended to give the plants a period of hot and very dry conditions - do not water at all when they go dormant after flowering, reintroducing water in the spring. Plants will not flower well if crowded, so split every 2-3 years for best results.
