PLEASE NOTE: Since plants are often sourced from the garden to order, sizes do vary a little, depending on how they come out of the ground, but I always endeavour to give a little more rather than less! They are sometimes shipped bare-rooted, but will approximate the size specified (e.g. a 9cm pot).
Not just any campion! Low-growing hummocks of furry leaves from which starry flowers in shades of pink raise their heads. Needs some TLC, but much recommended.
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Sow shallowly in autumn or spring, just covering with a thin layer of vermiculite at 68F/20C. Keep moist but absolutely not waterlogged, as this plant will not tolerate having its roots sitting in water at any stage in its development. Germination can be very slow and erratic, but once on the go, this plucky plant will frequently flower in the first year after sowing. Best grown in an alpine house or, failing that, in a very well drained situation, with plenty of grit around the roots and a layer of gravel or stones on the surface to help protect the squat, low-growing foliage, which is covered in fine, greyish hairs. Will not tolerate over-wet conditions in the winter. Autumn sowings should flower in their first year.
