A small to medium sized ornamental tree which lends interest to the garden at all times of year. Small, yellow flowers appear in spring, followed by fresh green foliage in spring and summer, then spectacular orange, red and pink autumn foliage in autumn. At all times of year the chestnut-red bark is present, peeling away in beautiful translucent curls which catch the light.
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Please note that seed viability is naturally low - it is recommended to sow all seeds supplied as soon as possible and expect a low percentage to germinate... and be sure to follow sowing instructions! For best results, sow as soon as possible. Firstly, place seeds into hot water and let stand for 24-48 hours. Then warm stratify by transferring the seeds into a plastic bag containing a moist sterilised peat/sand mix (or vermiculite or spagnum moss), keeping at 65-75F/18-24C for 16-20 weeks. After the warm period, sow in a peat/sand mix at a depth 0.25in/6mm and either put in a cold frame outside for the winter or enclose the pot in a ziplock bag and refrigerate for three months (checking for germination from time to time, and potting on any seedlings) putting outside in spring. Do not at any stage allow the seeds to dry out. Germination is slow and erratic, so don't discard sown pots for up to 2 years! |
