The seeds or plants on offer are either from 'Bishop of Llandaff' or 'Bishop of Auckland'. Although they are not expected to breed true, all my own sowings have resulted in plants with black foliage and flowers that strongly resembe the parents. Although generally considered tender, dahlias will very often overwinter successfully outside in sheltered positions.
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Sow February to April, no more than 0.25in/6mm deep (light aids germination, which should take 7-21 days) in good quality seed compost, covering with fine vermiculite or seived compost. Keep in a propagator at 20-25C/68-77F, transplanting seedlings into 9cm pots and growing on in cooler conditions, hardening off and planting out after all danger of frost is past. Usually grown as half-hardy annuals, but will often overwinter successfully in a sheltered garden. Alternatively, tubers can be lifted and stored in a dark, cool (frost-free) place until the following spring. |
