Hesperantha (syn. Schizostylis) coccinea 'Major' AGM

This lovely plant flowers for many months - even through the first frosts! Rich red, six-petalled, bowl-shaped blooms appear on straight stems above light-green, sword-shaped foliage from summer onwards. Although they do well in my relatively light soil, Hesperantha are probably happiest in moist, heavy soil as long as it is well-drained. NOTE: Plants, when available, will be as described (and may be delivered bare-rooted, depending on time of year), but seeds will not necessarily come true and may produce plants with red, pink or white flowers. |

Sowing and/or growing instructions
Sow thinly on the surface of good-quality, soil-based compost, covering with a very fine sprinkling of compost or fine grit. Heat is not necessary, but if sown towards the back end of the year, keeping them in an unheated greenhouse or cold frame will offer protection to young seedlings and also protect them from drying winds or heavy rain (but do ensure that they receive enough water - Schizostylis are moisture-loving plants!) Pot on seedlings as necessary and plant out when large enough. Plants will benefit from being split every two or three years to improve flowering. |
