Papaver orientale 'Coral Reef'
Oriental poppy 'Coral Reef'
Type/Hardiness Herbaceous, Perennial, Hardy
Flowering period Late Spring - early Summer
Height 24-36in/.60-90cm
Light preference Sun/part shade
Soil preference Any reasonable, well-drained soil
Sowing time/depth Feb-May, Surface
These lovely poppies, which have pink petals and a black centre, will, unlike many others, come true from seed. All the oriental poppies are gorgeous, with their huge, papery blooms, and are much loved by pollinating insects.
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Oriental poppies resent root disturbance so it is best to sow in the ground where they are to grow. Do not cover them with soil, as they require light for germination. Thin to 6 inches apart. Alternatively, sow thinly into small biodegradable pots containing moist, good quality compost, in a cold frame or cool greenhouse, covering with clear plastic to retain moisture. Pinch out all but one strong seedling (being careful not to disturb the roots of the remaining plant) and plant out, pot and all, when large enough. Cut back after flowering. This tends to leave a bare patch, but fresh rosettes of foliage will soon grow to fill the gap.
