Sow very thinly on the surface of moist, good-quality compost in late spring/early summer or late summer/autumn, in an unheated greenhouse or cold frame. Cover the seed with the barest sprinkling of fine vermiculite or grit (light is required for germination). Germination usually occurs within 3-5 weeks. Carefully transplant seedlings into individual pots when they are large enough to handle.

Seeds can be sown at almost any time of year, but they benefit froma period of cold to aid germination, so if it is warm, it is advisable to give the sown pot two or three weeks in the fridge, sealed in a plastic bag.) followed by a constant temperature of around 16C/60F.
