Tigridia pavonia | ||||||||||||

This exotic bulb in shades of red, yellow, white and cream is happiest in full sun in moist, well drained soil (add grit to the planting hole if soil is heavy). Tigridia can endure the cold, but for complete safety, in all but the mildest areas it is advisable to lift mature bulbs in autumn and store, preferably in peat or vermiculite, in a dry, frost-free place.
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Sow seed in moist, well-drained compost in spring, only 1/16in deep (it is considered that light aids germination), 1in/2cm apart, in a warm greenhouse or propagator, potting on into modules or small pots when 2-3in/5-8cm high and harden off before moving them to a cold frame, where they should remain until May of the following year when they can then be planted out. They may flower the first year if sown early enough, but certainly in the second. |
