'The Pearl' produces sprays of small, white, double flowers on wiry stems about 24 inches/60cm high, with narrow, toothed leaves. A spreading plant which is not too difficult to control in lighter soils. The blooms tend to last longer if the plant is sited in part shade, but full sunlight is tolerated. Lovely as a filler in flower arrangements.
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Sow onto the surface of moist, but not waterlogged, compost in spring or autumn. (Please note that it is impossible to fully isolate the seeds, so the packet will contain some chaff.) It may be beneficial to cover with clear plastic until germination occurs, which should take 14-21 days. Prick out seedlings and grow on in a cold frame, planting out when all danger of frost is past. Plants, particularly during autumn and winter, are sometimes supplied bare rooted and trimmed back. Plant so that the roots and proto-shoots are beneath soil level, making sure not to allow the plants to dry out (unlikely to be a problem at any time other than high summer) and allow nature to take its course! If the plant strays too far, just gently fork out and remove unwanted clumps. Cut hard back after flowering to prevent self-seeding. |
