Alstromeria with their bright, beautifully marked, lily-like blooms, look far too exotic for our climate but they are hardy plants that will survive in almost any situation.
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Sow seeds .2in/5mm deep, singly in modules or or 3 to a 9cm pot, in moist, but not waterlogged, soil-less seed compost. Seal in a plastic bag and keep at 70F/21C for 2 weeks. Then chill in a fridge at 40F/5C for a further 2 weeks, after which again provide a temperature of 70F/21C. Remove from the bag when germination, which should take 10-14 days, occurs. Grow plants on under glass, potting on as necessary but avoiding root disturbance. Plant out after all risk of frost, 6 inches deep in a sheltered spot in well drained soil. Plants can also be overwintered in a frost-free greenhouse and planted out the following spring.
