Easy to grow and delicious!

Although commonly referred to as nuts, the edible parts of this variety of grass are actually tubers. They are therefore suitable for individuals with nut allergies (though please research if in doubt). Highly nutritious - in fact classified as a 'super food' and a natural source of pro-biotics - with a sweet flavour, rather like a mixture of almond and coconut. Very easy to grow. Sowing and/or growing instructions
Soak the tubers for two or three days until they swell, then plant in large pots or planters, 1 in/15mm deep and no less than 6 in/16 cm apart, in very sandy, moist soil. Never allow the soil to dry out. Early sowings in a frost-free greenhouse are recommended to prolong the growing season (plants will die back with the first frosts). Tubers can be planted in the open ground, but it is recommended to plant in containers to reduce the potential for the plant to become invasive. Plants can grow to 3 feet/1 metre, but rarely reach this height. For best results, site plants in an open, very sunny position. When the top growth dies back in the autumn, collect the underground tubers, dry thoroughly and store. |
