Acanthus spinosus
Bear's Britches
Type/Hardiness Herbaceous, Perennial, Hardy
Flowering period June onwards
Height 1-1.5m
Light preference Full sun/part shade
Soil preference Not too fussy
Sowing time/depth Autumn, Spring, 0.25in/6mm
This stately, dramatic plant is happiest in full sun, but will also tolerate deep shade. Very useful cut flower, both fresh and dried. The flower spikes, with white blooms with purple bracts, appear above deeply divided dark green foliage.
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Either direct sow in autumn or February to April in pots in a cold frame. It may help germination to nick the seed coating. Grow on outside until large enough to plant out. Divide large clumps in spring or autumn. Can be prone to powdery mildew, which is minimised by watering well during hot, dry periods.
