Cerinthe major var. purpurascens

Deep purple, almost indigo, clusters of bells dangle above attractive glaucous, grey-green foliage. This wildflower is much loved by bees and butterflies. It self-seeds happily (but not invasively) in the gravel patio area in my garden, where it looks charming.
Sowing and/or growing instructions
The seed coating is quite hard, so it may be advisable to soak seeds overnight before sowing. Sow in early spring individually in small pots or modules of well-moistened compost and cover, preferably with vermiculite, to a depth of .5in/10mm. Place in a propagator or sealed plastic bag at 64-68C/18-20F, maintaining a slightly lower temperature for a couple of weeks after germination. Acclimatise young plants to outside conditions before planting out in final positions. Can also be sown November-December for early flowering in April-May of the following year. Plants will tend to self-seed, but generally not invasively. |
