Helianthus annuus
Sunflower
Type/Hardiness Annual, Half hardy
Flowering period July-September
Height 8ft/2.5m
Light preference Full sun
Soil preference Not too fussy
Sowing time/depth March-May,
These seeds will produce sunflowers in mixed colours and heights, but at up to 2.5m, are a good choice to fill in gaps at the back of the border. Branches freely, producing flowers of a perfect size for indoor flower arrangements (to prolong the life of the blooms it is best to pick them when they are not quite fully open and to remove almost all the leaves). If left on the plant, the seedheads that form later in the year are popular with wild birds. May need some support.
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Sow two March-May, either in situ, or in 3in pots, removing the weaker seedling.
