| A lovely woodland plant. Tall, dark, upright stems bear light green, maple-shaped leaves and the spherical flower buds open to 1in, waxy, pale yellow, bell-shaped blooms in autumn. Choose a well-sheltered site as although strictly speaking hardy, neither new spring growth nor flowers tolerate frost and mature plants do not like being battered by rain and wind. They will, however, usually recover from such ravages. | ||||||||||||
| Sowing and/or growing instructions | ||||||||||||
| Sow in spring on the surface, in modules filled with good, moist compost, and lightly dust with more compost or vermiculite, at around 70F/21C. Germination can take anything from 4 weeks to some months. Do not exclude light. Protect young plants from frost over winter and plant out in late spring/early summer in rich, moist, loamy soil - dislikes dry, alkaline situations. |
