An interesting shrubby perennial with strong, v-shaped markings (looking rather like bats), which are dark brownish-red - sometimes almost black - on a bright green ground. In the autumn delicate spikes of bright-crimson flowers appear on thin, wiry stems. Although it is recommended to grow in part or full shade (where it does a marvellous job, lighting up dark corners!), mine do very well in a more open, sunny position.
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Sow at any time of year, covering with just a little sieved compost or fine vermiculite. Germination usually occurs in spring, but seed may benefit from a period of cold to aid germination. A cold frame or unheated greenhouse will offer some protection to the sown pot, but heat is not required. Leaf markings can be variable, so grow on a number of seedlings and select the most attractive. |
