This delightful climber deserves a place in every garden! Throughout the summer and into autumn, near-black, tubular flowers with dark-pink bracts dangle amongst wiry, twining stems with toothed, heart-shaped, dark green leaves. For best effect, I plant three or four in a 9 inch pot. Despite its exotic appearance, the Purple Bell Vine is not difficult to grow and although tender, it can be overwintered successfully in a frost-free greenhouse or conservatory, where it will continue to flower for months. Also listed as Rhodochiton sanguineum, atrosanguineus and sanguineus.
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Sow onto the surface of a good quality, soil based compost at any time of year (spring if you are not prepared to overwinter seedlings), covering with a bare sprinkling of fine vermiculite or sieved compost. Germinate at 60-65F/15-18C, moving plants on into individual pots as they develop. When all risk of frost is past, plant in a large container and provide some support. Overwinter in a conservatory, frost-free greenhouse or warm, light window. Trim plants back when they have ceased flowering (or are becoming untidy) - this will encourage new shoots to grow, meaning even more flowers next season!
