The masses of yellow, orange and vermillion flowers produced throughout the summer are not only very pretty but an extremely useful 'companion' plant. Since growing them at the base of my greenhouse tomatoes aphid are a thing of the past! Tagetes are suitable for planters and baskets or the front of the border. If they become leggy, cut back by a few inches to promote fresh growth.
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Sow in March or April in good quality compost, covering with a thin layer of compost. Maintain a temperature of about 70F/21C, keeping moist but not too wet. Germination usually takes 7-14 days. Prick out seedlings when they are large enough to handle, into modules or small pots. Harden off and plant out when there is no risk of frost. Can also be sown direct .25in/6mm deep in late spring. |
