Tithonia rotundifolia 'Fiesta Del Sol'

A smaller, more compact variety than her sister, 'Torch', this is a lovely addition towards the front of the hot bed! A profusion of rich orange flowers from late summer to autumn, on branching plants growing to about 30in/80cm tall. A good cut flower, although the hollow neck of the cut blooms can be a little prone to sudden collapse, particularly if deprived of water for any length of time, so avoid picking blooms on a hot, sunny day. Tithonia is really a plant for a much warmer climate than the UK offers, and although it grows and flowers well, it sets very little viable seed before the weather rots the seedheads. Therefore the seed count is low.
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Sow by pressing gently onto the surface of a good, moist compost (tithonia germinates better if light is not excluded) under cover at at 13-18C/55-64F mid to late spring, planting out in full sun in well-drained soil when all danger of frost has passed. May require protection from slugs and snails. |
