Little white nodding bells on slender, red stems appear from late summer above bright-green, grass-like foliage. This is an attractive and unusual plant for the front of the border or in containers. Although said to prefer full sun, mine are in part shade and flourish there. Classified as half hardy, but generally long-lived if planted in a sheltered position.
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Seed can be sown at any time, but autumn/winter is recommended as cold is needed to trigger germination. Sow individually or very thinly in small pots or modules, covering with 5mm compost, fine grit or vermiculite and keep in a sheltered place such as a cold frame over winter. Germination will usually occur in the spring. If sowing at other times, place the sown pot in a sealed plastic bag and chill in the fridge for 4 weeks, then move to a cool, sheltered spot. Grow seedlings on until they are large enough to plant out. |
