This versatile little annual, which is native to North Africa, but easy to grow in our climate, should be better known! The blooms, which are a striking fuchsia-red with bright yellow lips - looking rather like miniature snapdragons - keep coming for many months in summer. Seldom exceeding 12 in/30 cm in height and with a slightly lax habit, they are a good choice for surrounding larger plants in baskets or containers. Prefers a sunny position in free-draining soil but will tolerate light shade.
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Best sown direct from March to May, 0.25 in/5 mm deep, thinning to about 6 in/15 cm apart when large enough to handle. Alternatively, sow very thinly in small modules under glass, on the surface of moist, but not waterlogged compost and covering with a sprinkling of sieved compost or fine vermiculite. Thin to leave the strongest seedling in each and plant out after all danger of frost is past. Avoid root disturbance. The plants will tend to gently self-seed in subsequent years. |
