Nicotiana alata (Syn. affinis) var. grandiflora
Flowering tobacco, Jasmine tobacco
Type/Hardiness Annual, Hardy
Flowering period June-October
Height 30-36in/80cm-1m
Light preference Full sun/part shade
Soil preference Moist, free-draining
Sowing time/depth Spring, Surface
The queen of flowering tobacco plants! Taller and more robust than more modern varieties, the tall stems bear masses of pendulous, star-shaped blooms, starting greenish white, fading to cream and then white. Their wonderful fragrance wafts through the garden in the evenings. Highly recommended.
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Sow in spring, on the surface of moist compost, covering with a dusting of compost or vermiculite. Prick out into individual pots or modules when large enough to handle. Acclimatise to outdoor conditions before moving to their final positions. Alternatively, sow direct in spring. Adequate watering will help reduce the possibility of mildew appearing on the foliage, but this has never been a problem for me.
