This attractive perennial is bushy plant growing to a height of around 24 inches/60 cm. It has intricately divided foliage and produces masses of small flowers with deep-burgundy centres surrounded by paler petals, borne on wiry stems. Attractive to butterflies and other pollinating insects and makes a good cut flower.
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Surface sow under glass in Spring onto good quality, moist compost, covering with the barest sprinkling of sieved compost or fine vermiculite. Provide a temperature of 65-70F/18-21C for germination, which can be erratic, taking from 7-40 days. Pot on seedlings into individual pots or modules and grow on, hardening off before planting outside after all danger of frost is past. My experience is that the plant is not reliably hardy, my suspicion being that excessive wet, rather than cold, is the culprit. |
