Contrasting strongly with the soft, grey-green, downy leaves, the mass of vibrant magenta blooms on this popular cottage garden plant will really hit you between the eyes! I have found that if stems are cut right back after the first flush of flowers in spring, the plants will bloom again from late summer to autumn, probably not in such great profusion, but a welcome touch of colour when other plants are past their best. Self seeds. A good cut flower and loved by bees. (Formerly known as Lychnis coronaria but now more properly named Silene coronaria.)
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Direct sow September to May, half an inch deep (deep enough to exclude light), thinning to 18in apart. Tolerates most soil types, but prefers full sun. Can also be sown in seed trays or modules for planting out later. |
