Solanum lycopersicum 'Sun Gold'
Tomato 'Sun Gold'
Type/Hardiness Annual, Perennial, Vegetable, Fruit, Half hardy
Flowering period Summer
Height
Light preference Full sun
Soil preference Moist, free-draining
Sowing time/depth February-April, barely cover
The small, golden yellow fruits are sweet and juicy. It's just as well that they fruit prolifically, because it is difficult to pass by the greeenhouse in summer without snacking!
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Sow Feb-Mar for greenhouse plants, Mar-Apr if growing outdoors. Sow thinly onto the surface of damp seed compost, barely covering with a little vermiculite or compost. Germinate in a propagator or sealed plastic bag at 59-68F/15-20C, which usually takes 7-14 days. Transplant into 3in pots when large enough to handle and grow on under glass, moving into growbags, 9-10in pots or directly into the greenhouse soil in late May for greenhouse growing. Wait until June, or when all risk of frost has passed, for outside planting, which can be in growbags, large pots or directly into the soil. In either case, provide adequate support for the plants. Pinch out side shoots as they appear and stop plants when they have set 6-7 trusses under glass, less outside. Apply tomato feed as per manufacturers' instructions throughout the growing season. Tomato cultivation is a big subject - these instructions are the bare bones! Note: Outdoor tomatoes are more liable to succumb to blight.
