Welsh Onion, Bunching Onion
Type/Hardiness Bulbous perennial, vegetable, Hardy
Flowering period June-July
Height 12-16in/30-40cm
Light preference Full sun
Soil preference Any, free-draining
Sowing time/depth March-August, 1in/2.5cm
A non-bulbing 'bunching onion' that is useful when just a hint of onion is required. An attractive plant that can be grown in an ornamental bed. Bees and other beneficial insects love it!
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Sow in rows in the vegetable or herb bed, or perhaps in a clump in a flower bed. All onions prefer dark conditions to germinate, so plant seeds at least an inch or so deep. You may wish to thin the young plants a little, but not really necessary, since larger plants tend to compete with and crowd out the runts.
