New England Aster 'Purple Dome', Michaelmas Daisy

This very pretty aster has a compact form, generally needing no support. From late summer it is studded with hundreds of rich, pinkish-purple flowers with yellow centres. It continues to flower even past the first frosts, providing welcome colour at the back end of the year. A very good cut flower. I cannot guarantee that seed, when offered, will come true, but worth trying and if it does not, you may discover a gem!
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Sow on the surface of moist compost, covering with a fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Place in a propagator or sealed plastic bag at 68-86F/20-30C. Do not exclude light as this is necessary for germination. Pot on seedlings as they develop and grow on in cooler conditions until large enough to plant out. (Seeds are difficult to fully isolate, so although I endeavour to remove much, some chaff is present. Just sow from the packet, chaff and all.) Asters can often be susceptible to powdery mildew, but this variety has so far grown well in my garden without succumbing to this disease. |
