Visitors to the garden often fall in love with this plant, which forms a large clump and has large spherical buds opening to clear yellow flowers surrounded by unusual, papery brown bracts. The mature seed heads are a natural 'barometer', opening and closing according to humidity.
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Can be direct sown after danger of frost has passed, but it might be safer to sow in pots under glass Feb-May or Sept-Nov. Darkness and good moisture is needed for germination (21-30days), and the plants do not like disturbance, so sow, 0.75in/2cm deep in well watered compost in modules. Place in propagator or plastic bag at 70F/20C. Keep moist. Grow on in good light. Carefully transplant into larger pots and plant out strong plants 2ft apart, preferably on a dull day, watering in well. |
