Centaurea montana
Perennial cornflower, Mountain bluet
Type/Hardiness Herbaceous, Perennial, Hardy
Flowering period Spring/Summer
Height 4-18in/10-45cm
Light preference Full sun/part shade
Soil preference Any, but moist and well-drained
Sowing time/depth Spring, 0.15in/3mm
This wildflower has been a popular garden plant for generations. Rich blue with a reddish-purple centre, it makes a good cut flower for smaller arrangements and posies. Dead-head regularly to promote fresh blooms. The plant has a lax habit, so either cut long stems back by half to discourage legginess or stake if you want taller plants. (Plants offered are sometimes trimmed back, particularly during the summer, but will very quickly bulk out.)
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Sow in a cold frame in spring or in situ.
