Cerastium tomentosum | ||||||||||||
Snow-in-Summer, White rock flower

||||||||||||
This evergreen, mat-forming perennial has small, grey-green leaves and produces a veritable carpet of small white blooms in late spring through to early summer. A wonderful plant to grow at the front of borders or tumbling over walls. It requires very free-draining soil as it does not like its roots to be too wet.
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Sow thinly on the surface of a pot of moist compost under glass, at 21C/70F. Transplant seedlings into individual pots or modules when large enough to handle and grow on in cooler conditions in a cold frame or sheltered spot. Plant out in a sunny position, 9-12 inches apart, in autumn or spring. Plants may benefit from being sheared back after flowering to prevent them from becoming straggly. Depending on conditions, plants may be short-lived; they resent waterlogged conditions, which can cause the roots to rot. |
