Larkspur, Annual Delphinium, Doubtful knight's spur
More dainty than the related delphinium, larkspur produces pink or deep blue blooms freely throughout the summer months, on tall stems with finely cut, feathery foliage. Quite variable in height. A good cut flower, if you can bear to remove it from the garden, where it always looks so beautiful! However, dead heading prolongs the flowering period. Will benefit from watering during dry periods.
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Larkspur doesn't seem to like being disturbed, so it is recommended to sow direct, thinning as necessary. Alternatively sow in modules in spring and carefully transplant young, strong plants to the desired positions. Larkspur requires dark for germination, so make sure to sow deeply enough and cover containers with black plastic or layers of paper until the first seedlings appear. |
