Papaver somniferum, Ex. white, single
Opium Poppy, white, single
Type/Hardiness ,
Flowering period June-August
Height 36-48in/1-1.5m
Light preference Full sun
Soil preference light, free-draining
Sowing time/depth , barely cover
This variant of the opium poppy has pure white blooms, usually single, with perhaps an occasional double or semi-double. These seeds are harvested from white plants, but other colours grow nearby. Although these are removed as soon as identified to help prevent cross-pollination, it cannot be guaranteed that all these seeds will breed true - however, a very reasonable proportion should do so. If in doubt wait until the first buds are almost mature and gently tease one open; you will be able to identify the colour and remove unwanted plants).
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Direct sow in autumn or spring, in a sunny position, thinning to about 9-15in apart.
