Scilla litardierei 'Amethystina' AGM
Amethyst meadow squill
Type/Hardiness Bulbous perennial,
Flowering period Spring/early summer
Height 4-8in/10-20cm
Light preference Sun, Part shade
Soil preference Any reasonable soil
Sowing time/depth Any time, pref. autumn, 0.2in/5mm
A lovely little plant with intensely blue flower spikes from spring to early summer. The seeds on offer will, of course, need time to develop into bulbs of flowering size, but they can be left to their own devices and grow quite quickly. These are very useful bulbs for naturalising, because they form clumps of large bulbs rather than producing many tiny, non-flowering offsets.
Sowing and/or growing instructions
The seeds can be sown at any time, but autumn is a good choice as they will usually benefit from frosty, winter conditions in order to germinate reliably in spring. Sow in small pots, covering with 0.2in/5mm grit. Keep outside in a sheltered spot, transferring seedlings to individual pots and growing on until large enough to plant out in their final positions.
