Bistorta officinalis 'Superba'
Red bistort 'Superba' | ||||||||||||
|
||||||||||||
Soft spikes of tiny pink flowers on straight stems from May and well into the summer, above broad, deeply veined, grey-green leaves. Makes good ground cover. Spreads rapidly by underground runners but these are not far beneath the surface, so are easily removed in open ground as required. (Synonym Persicaria bistorta.)
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Sow thinly under glass, Jan-Mar in good quality, soil-based seed compost, covering with a thin layer of sieved compost or fine vermiculite. Cover with plastic or place in a propagator at 20C/68F. Germination should commence in 28-42 days, but can be slow and erratic. If germination does not occur, try chilling the sown seeds in a fridge for 4-6 weeks, then return to warmer conditions. Grow on in cooler conditions, planting out after all risk of frost has passed. |
