A dynamic flowering houseplant native to South Africa, Clivia miniata is a rewarding plant to grow. Equally attractive when in its dormant stage, with broad, arching, spear-shaped leaves, but coming into its own when the flowers, which last for weeks, put on a show! Highly recommended.
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Sow indoors on receipt. Do not completely cover the seeds, but press, with the eye to the side, into moist, well-drained compost so that half the seed remains exposed. Cover to exclude light until germination, which usually takes about 6 weeks. Aim to provide a temperature of 16-20C/60-70F. To help avoid damping off, dust or water in a fungicide and keep compost moist but not over-wet. Grow seedlings on in individual pots. Keep plants indoors in a bright location, but not in constant direct sunlight, feeding weekly and watering freely in summer. In the autumn, reduce watering and provide a cooler, shadier spot until late winter, then bring back into lighter, warmer surroundings. This helps encourage flowering. |
