Helenium x cultorum Ex. Rauchtopas

This stately helenium flowers profusely, with masses of daisy-like, yellow florets with orange-red reverses, surrounding a prominent brown cone. Although, like all heleniums, the seed is unlikely to come true, it should produce some attractive plants, so worth giving a try. Although listed as requiring full sun, mine is in part shade and does extremely well there. My instinct is that good airflow around the plant and free draining soil are more important than a baking hot spot. A good cut flower.
Sowing and/or growing instructions
It is not possible to fully isolate the seeds from the chaff, but the packet will contain hundreds of seeds. Sow the contents fairly liberally in Spring at 70F/20C, under glass, barely covering with a little compost or vermiculite. Prick out seedlings and grow on, planting out when no risk of frost. Since these seeds will not come true, the best method of propagation is to split plants you like in future. Plants are best divided in spring as autumn divisions often die. |
