| This sweet little iris, standing only a few inches tall, has pale blue flowers with striking veins, and are yellow at the centre, fading to silver. The blooms appear above green, spear-shaped leaves. | ||||||||||||

| Iris usually need winter temperatures and moisture to germinate reliably, so don't cosset them! Soaking the seeds for a couple of days is recommended to remove germination inhibitors. Change the water after the first 24 hours. (Don't worry if the seed floats - this is normal for Iris setosa.) Then sow thinly, half an inch deep, into pots or modules containing good quality, gritty seed compost that is moist but not waterlogged. Overwinter in a cold frame, ensuring that they are kept moist, and pot on individually when they germinate, which should happen in the spring. When large enough, plant out 6-9 inches apart. |
