| 2018 was my first year growing this variety of Oenothera and I am delighted with it! A smaller, more delicate plant than the more familiar biennis, glazioviana and odorata, the flowers are diminutive - not much more than an inch (25mm) across, opening (in the morning rather than the evening, so the common name is sundrops rather than evening primroses) a soft orangey-red, fading to deep apricot. Very pretty! A good plant for containers. | ||||||||||||
| Sowing and/or growing instructions | ||||||||||||
| Sow in spring on the surface of good quality compost, dusting with a fine sprinkling of vermiculite. Do not cover the seed as light is required for germination. Place in a propagator at 18-20C/64-68F. Transplant seedlings into individual pots or modules and grow on in cooler conditions. When large enough and after all danger of frost, plant out 12 inches apart. Plants may benefit from gentle support. Plants should be cut back to close to ground level in late autumn but can be tidied up a little earlier if required, by removing the top half to two-thirds of the flowering stems. Since the plants can be short-lived, it is recommended to save a few seeds just in case, to sow in spring! |
