A popular marginal pond plant, this bulrush has very attractive dark brown (almost black) seed heads in spring, above dark-green, grass-like foliage. The seeds, although extremely small, are popular with garden birds. |
Sowing and/or growing instructions |
It may help distribution of the minute seeds to mix with fine sand before sowing, which should be on the surface of very moist, preferably peaty, compost. Stand the pot in a dish of water and never allow to dry out. Germination can be erratic, sometimes taking many months. Pot seedlings on when they are large enough to handle and grow on until they are large enough to plant out in shallow water. |
