| Although a perennial, this stunning plant is usually grown as an annual, as it will not withstand frost. It forms a bushy mound of small leaves from which rise flower stems topped with large umbels composed of many tiny mauve flowers. A wonderful cut flower - much recommended! | ||||||||||||
| Sowing and/or growing instructions | ||||||||||||
| Mix the seeds with a little very fine sand and sow in spring or autumn, dusting the surface of a small pot of moist, but not waterlogged, compost with some of the contents of the packet. Keep under glass. A temperature of 20C may speed germination but heat is not required. Carefully transplant strongest seedlings into individual pots and plant out spring-sown plants when all danger of frost is past. Autumn-sown plants will need to be overwintered in a frost-free environment. Note: Seeds are like dust (I understand that there are around 100,000 per gram!) and usually sold pelleted, but I don't have the facilities to do this. I have managed to remove much of the chaff, but some is still present. I have examined the harvest under magnification and although it is impossible to quantify exactly how many seeds are in a packet there will be many hundreds, if not thousands. |
