There is a large clump of the single white variety of this familiar and much loved cottage garden plant established behind the pond, and it often breeds true. Although there could be some cross-pollination with other colours in the garden, I am confident that the seeds offered will produce a good proportion of white plants,. The foliage of lighter varieties tends to be paler green and without red in the stems, so to be on the safe side I'd recommend growing on only those seedlings that fit these specifications.
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Sow shallowly Feb-June or Sept-Oct in pots or modules in a propagator or sealed plastic bag at a temperature of around 15-20C/59-70F. Do not exclude light; this is necessary to aid germination, which can take from 1-3 months. Plant out spring-sown seedlings about 12in/30cm apart when large enough to handle easily, trying not to disturb the root ball. It is a good idea to overwinter autumn-sown plants in a cold frame before planting out in spring. |
